Healthy schools success

13 July 2011

St Clement’s and St John’s primary schools are the most recent Jersey schools to be recognised for their work in developing and promoting health in schools.

The Healthy Schools programme, which is jointly supported by Education, Sport and Culture and Health and Social Services, is designed to promote the link between good health, behaviour and achievement. In order to achieve the Healthy Schools award, schools need to demonstrate how they work together with students, staff, parents and the wider community to develop good practice around the following 4 key areas:

  • personal social health education (PSHE)
  • healthy eating
  • physical activity
  • emotional health and well being

Awards presentation

To celebrate their achievement, both schools will be presented with their certificate and plaque by past pupils who have built on their enjoyment of sport to achieve medals in the Isle of Wight Island Games.

Kim Ashton, a gold medallist in cycling at the 2011 Games, is a former pupil of St Clement’s school and will present their award at an assembly on Friday 15 July.

Elliot Dorey, who attended St John’s school, is a bronze medallist in the 800m, despite being only 17 years old. He will present the Healthy Schools award on Thursday 21 July.

Headteacher of St Clement’s School, Sheila Ponomarenko, said "Working towards Healthy Schools accreditation throughout the year has focused the whole school community on a wide range of issues which are related to developing healthy lifestyles. The children particularly enjoyed the work they did on preparing and sampling healthy foods. We have been delighted that parents have consistently supported the school in providing delicious and nutritious snacks and lunch boxes. It has been a busy but very worthwhile process.”

Headteacher Trudie De La Haye of St John’s School, agrees "We are delighted to have achieved the Healthy Schools Award. Mrs Lynn Parkes has led the initiative at St John’s School and every member of staff has worked hard to provide and collate all the evidence within each of the four areas. A healthy lifestyle and making healthy choices in life is an important part of our curriculum from Nursery to Year 6 and achieving this award endorses our philosophy and commitment to a healthy approach to life.”
