Eco-Active school awards

More than 80 children will gather at the aMaizin’ Adventure Park to find out if they have won the first Eco-Active Sustainable Schools award.

Students have been working hard over the past year on a range of projects including travel planning, recycling, gardening, global studies and outdoor lessons that help them learn about sustainable development issues.

Presentation ceremony

Judging took place on 9 and 10 June and the winners will be announced on 23 June. The successful primary and secondary schools will each receive £1,000. As well as a presentation ceremony, the students will be able to use the park facilities and take part in a range of eco activities. These include ‘bug safaris’ and building a ‘bug hotel’ with help from Stephen Le Quesne, the National Trust for Jersey’s education officer.

The Eco-Active Sustainable Schools framework was launched in March 2010 to replace Jersey Environment Week and promote environmental issues in schools throughout the year. The awards are a joint initiative between the Environment and Education, Sport and Culture departments.

Environment Minister Senator Freddie Cohen said “The Eco-Acitve Sustainable Schools Framework helps schools integrate sustainable development into all areas of school life, such as learning outside the classroom, recycling, healthy living and citizenship. The award ceremony is a way of thanking schools for all their hard work in these areas and I am delighted at the number of schools that have entered for an award this year.”

Education, Sport and Culture Minister Deputy James Reed said “I’m very pleased that such a large number of our students are getting involved in this project and learning about these important issues in such an engaging way. I wish all the entrants the best of luck in the competition.”

Sustainable school status

Schools that have submitted a full and satisfactory application will also receive Eco-Active Sustainable School Status.

ICECAP, which sponsored the Eco-Active Schools Green Travel Survey, will also be presenting awards to the schools that made the greatest improvements in sustainable travel during the Island’s first Walk to School Fortnight in May.
