Jersey to join Earth Hour

28 March 2012

Join millions of people worldwide on Saturday night by taking 1 simple action – turn your lights off.

This Saturday 31 March, between 8.30pm and 9.30pm, the World Wildlife Fund is holding its annual Earth Hour – and everyone is invited to take part. Hundreds of millions of people, businesses and governments around the world unite each year to support the environmental event.

The Eco-Active team has again arranged with Transport and Technical Services to switch off the lights at Elizabeth Castle, the Victoria Avenue Promenade, St Aubin’s Fort and Mont Orgueil Castle for the hour.

Department of the Environment Education and Awareness Officer Olivia Copsey said that Eco-Active Businesses and Eco-Active States departments have also been encouraged to take part. “It is such a simple thing to do, but by joining a global community, we can send a powerful message for action on climate change, and draw attention to the small ways that we can reduce our energy use everyday,” said Mrs Copsey.

More than 5,200 cities and towns in 135 countries worldwide switched off their lights for Earth Hour 2011 alone. For more information about Earth Hour click on the link to the right of this page.
