Secondary school transfer

06 January 2012

Parents of children who are currently in Year 6 (the final year) at a States primary school will receive a form next week from the Education, Sport and Culture Department offering them a place in their catchment area secondary school – either Le Rocquier, Grainville, Haute Vallee or Les Quennevais.

They are being urged to respond as soon as possible to confirm if they:

  • accept the place offered
  • decline the place offered because a place has been accepted in the fee paying sector
  • request a place in a different 11-16 school and give reasons for the request

Parents should return the completed form directly to their catchment school.

If children are currently in a fee-paying school, parents will not routinely be offered a place in one of the 11-16 secondary schools. If they wish their child to go to Le Rocquier, Grainville, Haute Vallee or Les Quennevais, they should contact the ESC Department by 12 January.

Also, to avoid duplication, parents will not be offered a place at a States secondary if they have accepted a place in a fee-paying secondary school.

Requests for out-of-catchment places are considered by the ESC department and parents are usually informed of the outcome around the end of February. If necessary, there is an appeals process, which takes place at the end of March. Applications should be sent to the Director of Education, Sport and Culture by 9 March giving a brief outline of the grounds for the appeal. Hearings are held towards the end of March and parents will be informed of the outcome within 48 hours.

Parents can find out their catchment school by contacting the ESC department, their parish hall or by looking at the map available online. They can also contact their local primary school to confirm which catchment area they are in.
