Seasonal advice for air travellers

12 December 2012

Jersey Airport is reminding air travellers to check with their airline before starting their journey if they have any questions about what they are allowed to carry on board the aircraft. For example, any wrapped presents must be packed in checked-in hold luggage, while presents carried as hand luggage must remain unwrapped as they may be examined.

Similarly, ‘liquid’ items such as perfumes, pastes, gels, jams, preserves, dairy products and lotions must also be carried in checked-in luggage. However, these items can still be carried as hand luggage if they're in containers of less than 100ml and in a clear re-sealable bag and presented at security search, where they will be tested.

Group Customer Relationships Manager for Ports of Jersey, Rosemarie Grimster, who is responsible for services provided in the airport terminals, is keen to remind passengers to pay special attention to what goods they can carry "It is perfectly understandable at this time of the year that people are travelling with a higher than usual number of presents and we want them to have as smooth a journey as possible through the airport.

"However, strict security measurements do remain in place, which all airports must continue to adhere to, even at this time of the year. But we are hopeful that by giving our passengers advance warning by ways of a timely reminder of what they are permitted to carry on board, it will decrease the risk they take of having items denied boarding at security search."

Passengers are also reminded that Christmas crackers are not permitted in hand baggage, however some airlines will accept them provided they are stored in checked-in hold luggage. These will only be permitted in small quantities if they are factory produced and are in an unopened box. No home-made crackers, ‘party poppers’ or any other types of explosive device are allowed in the cabin or in the hold by any airline.
