Garage fires in St Helier and St Saviour

03 December 2013

A person was rescued from a house in St Helier in the early hours of this morning (3 December 2013).

Fire and Rescue Services were called to a garage fire next to a house in Roussel Mews. Four firefighters extinguished the fire while the occupant of the house was led to safety. No-one was injured but the contents of the garage, which included three cars, two motorcycles and a propane cylinder, were completely destroyed.

It's the second garage fire this week. Fire and Rescue Services were also called to a semi-detached property at Longueville on Monday 2 December to put out a fire. The fire was extinguished by the occupier before emergency services arrived. It's thought the fire was started by hot embers that were removed from an open fire and placed in the garage next to flammable materials.

Islanders who have open fires are being reminded to take hot embers outside where there is less risk of a fire or a build up of carbon monoxide.
