Islanders reminded of wildlife code

27 June 2014

The Department of the Environment is urging all users of our seas and coast to follow the Jersey Marine and Coastal Wildlife Watching Code, which can be downloaded from the States website or obtained directly from the Department.

The code is designed to encourage Islanders to enjoy Jersey’s marine wildlife in the best way for all concerned. The reminder has been issued with the summer season in mind, when the increased number of people using local waters makes wildlife encounters more likely.

The Department’s Marine and Coastal Manager, Greg Morel, said “Jersey has an incredibly rich and diverse marine environment with many iconic species including dolphins, seals, and many seabirds. All these wild animals and their habitats are sensitive to disturbance and need to be treated with respect and understanding. By acting in this way and following the code, we can ensure we enjoy our interactions with wildlife safely and that our impact is kept to a minimum.”

To get a copy of the Jersey Marine and Coastal Wildlife Watching Code, please either call the Environment Department on 441600 or download it from the States website.
