Cycle helmet law comes into force

30 September 2014

From next Monday, 6 October, it will be compulsory for anyone who is younger than 14 to wear a cycle helmet when riding a bicycle on a road or cycle track.

Any cyclist aged 13 or under must wear a helmet:

  • that meets safety standards
  • that is no more than ten years old
  • that is correctly sized for the wearer
  • that is adjusted and positioned to fit the child, and securely fastened

The legislation was approved in July, but its implementation was postponed to give parents time to purchase cycle helmets for their children.
