Chief Minister's statement on teachers' pay

26 June 2019

The Chair of the States Employment Board and Chief Minister, Senator John Le Fondré, has today announced that the Government has reached agreement with NASUWT teaching union officials about the 2018-20 pay offer, after months of negotiations.

The Chief Minister said: “SEB’s negotiators held further meetings and discussions with NASUWT officials, in order to explore their concerns about the teachers’ pay offer. We are happy that we were able to clarify understanding of the detail in the pay offer and provide reassurance to the union officials about the scope of the review of teachers’ supplementary allowances. We are pleased that the offer will now be put to their members, and hope that we will be able satisfactorily to conclude the teachers’ 2018-20 pay review.”

The proposed agreement provides for the following core pay offer:

• 2018 – 2% consolidated increase plus 1.1% non-consolidated cash payment
• 2019 – 2% consolidated increase plus 1.0% non-consolidated cash payment
• 2020 – RPI + 1.3% consolidated increase, plus an additional 0.8% funded through reforms and sustainable efficiencies.

Over the three years (based on an assumed RPI of 3.1%) this represents a consolidated increase worth 9.4%, plus 2.1% of non-consolidated cash payments.

The offer has already been agreed by teachers represented by the National Education Union.
