Update on pay negotiations

03 June 2019

Constable Richard Buchanan

The Deputy Chair of the States Employment Board, Constable Richard Buchanan, has issued the below statement to provide an update on pay negotiations.

“Negotiators for the States Employment Board held a further all-day meeting with the NASUWT on Friday, in an effort to resolve the pay dispute. This meeting was held under the auspices of the Jersey Advisory and Conciliation Service. The next meetings, again involving JACS, are planned for 5 and 6 June, and our other teaching union, NEU, are also attending.

“The States Employment Board is meeting again today (3 June) to discuss the progress made to date and is very likely to authorise negotiators to make a further offer, along similar lines to that made to our civil servants in recent days. This would involve a higher offer, in exchange for sustainable savings and efficiencies that strengthen educational outcomes for our children and young people.

“We are inviting teachers and their unions to work with us to identify those efficiencies which can then be shared with teachers from 1 January 2020. As well as resolving the pay dispute and ending disruption to education, we intend that this collaborative approach, involving teachers and unions at every step of the way, will help build trust and reinforce the value that we all place in our teachers.”
