Islanders will from next month have more opportunities to recycle their household and green waste at weekends and bank holidays.
From Monday 10 June, the Household Reuse and Recycling Centre and Household Green Waste Reception at La Collette will be open for longer at weekends and on some bank holidays.
The opening times are changing following customer surveys and a questionnaire that aimed to better understand when customers wanted to use the La Collette facilities.
The research showed that the majority of customers primarily used the waste and recycling facilities during the weekend and that longer Sunday opening, along with a later closing time on a weekday evening, would be welcomed. As a result, the Household Reuse and Recycling Centre and Household Green Waste Reception at La Collette will be open 9am to 5pm on Saturdays and Sundays and will be open until 7pm on Mondays.
Weekday opening hours will reduce so that the facilities can open for longer at weekends. The new weekday opening times are based on traffic counts that revealed few customers used the facilities very early in the day, and fewer visited the site on a Wednesday.
Current opening times are Monday to Saturday 7.30am to 4.15pm, and Sunday 8am to 12.45pm. The new opening times will be:
- Monday 10am to 7pm
- Tuesday 9am to 4pm
- Wednesday Closed
- Thursday 9am to 4pm
- Friday 9am to 4pm
- Saturday 9am to 5pm
- Sunday 9am to 5pm
The site will open on some bank holidays and will close on Wednesdays for operational and maintenance work.
Deputy Kevin Lewis, Minister for Infrastructure, said: “We understand that to increase recycling it has to be easy and we hope that by listening to our customers and changing our opening times, more people will find it easier to access our household facilities at La Collette.
“When we recycle, materials are reprocessed into new products, which reduces the amount of rubbish sent for incineration and means we are consuming fewer natural resources.”
Customers are being advised of the new opening times in advance of the change. More information, including what happens to recycled waste, can be found on the link to the right of this page.
