Government forms Construction Industry Response Team

27 March 2020

Coronavirus: construction

The Government of Jersey has established the Construction Industry Response Team, in partnership with the Jersey Construction Council and sector representatives, to ensure measures are in place to protect the industry’s future and support businesses within the sector.

The Government of Jersey is committed to minimising the long-term effects of the COVID-19 pandemic by implementing coordinated, meaningful and swift action. The local construction industry accounts for approximately 10% of the Island’s labour market, with more than 1,300 businesses providing services.

In these uncertain times, Government is committed to support all construction industry areas including building, engineering, civil works, maintenance and design services.

The Construction Industry Response Team has been formed to provide an urgent response to this unfolding global situation. It is important the industry has confidence in our ability to provide meaningful assistance at both a strategic and tactical level.

Short, medium and long-term measures have been set out to reassure the industry that, by planning now, we can monitor, support and provide clear leadership for the Industry at this challenging time.

Martin Holmes, Chairman of the Jersey Construction Council, said: "We welcome this proactive and timely engagement with the Government to ensure that the industry that provides the essential infrastructure of our island is supported through this unprecedented crisis to help mitigate the immediate financial difficulties that our many businesses face and to plan for a sustainable future."
