Jersey wins UK planning award

03 December 2020

A Government assessment into the Island’s marine and land environments has won top prize at the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI) South West Awards for Planning Excellence.

The Jersey Integrated Landscape and Seascape Character Assessment won the Excellence in Plan Making Category, and the overall Excellence in Planning Award, and goes through to the RTPI’s national awards, which celebrate the best of planning throughout the British Isles and highlight examples of how planning can have a positive impact on the quality of life.

The Jersey Integrated Landscape and Seascape Character Assessment (ILSCA)
investigates how the Island's land and marine environments contribute to its sense of place, which is critical for the planning and management of development and change. The assessment set out a series of recommendations on how to protect and enhance the Island’s natural environment and will be a key part of the evidence base to help shape new planning policies for the entire Bailiwick.

The ILSCA was developed by Jersey town planners who collaborated with staff from across Government and landscape specialists at Fiona Fyfe Associates.

The Government of Jersey’s Head of Place and Spatial Planning, Kevin Pilley, said: “To have our work recognised outside the Island in this way is very rewarding. I am delighted that the RTPI considered the ILSCA to be both innovative and a potential exemplar in planning for other island and coastal communities.”

The RPTI’s National Awards for Planning Excellence which will take place in April next year.
