Eco Challenge winners announced

As part of Jersey's Climate Conversation young Islanders were asked to take part in an Eco Challenge to produce creative pieces of work which reflected how they feel about the environment, climate change and biodiversity.

Islanders aged 11-18 took part in the Challenge to paint, draw, write, film, compose, or create any other form of art while considering questions, including:

  • what do you imagine when you think of climate change?
  • what does climate change mean to you?
  • how have you been affected by climate change?
  • do you think COVID-19 has impacted Jersey's environment? If so, how?

The entries were judged by the Environment Minister, Deputy John Young, artist Ian Rolls, photographer Matt Porteous, and poet Traci O'Dea.

Environment Minister, Deputy John Young, said: "I have really enjoyed reviewing all the entries submitted to the Eco Challenge, it's clear, judging from the response and quality of work, how much enthusiasm young people have for the protection of our planet. Entries covered a number of very pertinent themes such as ocean pollution, sea levels and even fashion pollution.

"The mediums of art, the written word and film have inspired our 11-18-year-olds to express themselves in a creative way, they have demonstrated how passionate they are about their future world."

A prize giving took place on Thursday 13 May, when the winners were announced:

Overall winner: 3.11 – Coral Dress – Jasmine Furness (JCG)  

  • Category 1 winner: 1.18 – Paper dress – Molly McGinnety (Le Rocquier)  
  • Commendation: 1.07 – Puffin – Nina Blacharska (Grainville)  
  • Commendation: 1.10 – Turtle story – Ava Hadjam (JCG)  
  • Category 2 winner: 2.01 – 'Mother Earth' – Mariella Gouveia (Hautlieu)  
  • Commendation: 2.02 - 'What have we learnt' – Henry Humpleby (De La Salle)  
  • Commendation: 2.05 – 'Eco Wishlist' - Yasmin Forbes (JCG) 
  • Category 3 winner: 3.10 – Freedom Tree – Matthew Brown (Hautlieu)  
  • Commendation: 3.12 – 'Be the Change' (video) - Katie White (JCG)  
  • Commendation: 3.02 – Covid/Beach Video - Nicole Marques (Hautlieu)  
  • Commendation: 3.06 – Coffee dress – Beth Cooper, Tia Quinn, Cara Williams (JCG)  
  • Commendation: 3.15 – Deforestation dress – Naomi Balderson (JCG)  

An exhibition of the winning entries will take place Exhibition at Liberty wharf on Friday 14 and Saturday 15 May.
