Views invited on new heritage strategy

​Islanders are being asked for their views on a new strategy for the development and safekeeping of Jersey's heritage.

The draft Heritage Strategy for Jersey aims to develop the heritage sector so that all Islanders can better understand, value and enjoy Jersey's unique heritage.

The Assistant Minister with Responsibility for Culture, Deputy Kirsten Morel, said: "Our Islands' heritage is incredibly rich and encompasses so much more than just historic built environments and landscapes. It includes cultural practices, knowledge and living experiences. Heritage is the irreplaceable essence of what makes Jersey, and it is vital that we protect it.

"Jersey's heritage contributes to our Island's unique identity, beautiful environment, vibrant community and sustainable economy. The development of this heritage strategy is an opportunity to combine forces across the sector to protect, value, develop, and reinvigorate our incredible heritage sector.

"The strategy has been developed in conjunction with key stakeholders, and now I'd like Islanders to review it and give their opinion on this important piece of work."

The drafting of the strategy has led to the creation of the Shadow Heritage Partnership, which includes the largest heritage organisations, Jersey Heritage Trust, National Trust for Jersey and the Société Jersiaise, who will work together to develop the programmes to deliver the strategy as well as produce an annual heritage statement for the States Assembly.

Deputy Morel said: "The purpose of the heritage statement will be to update Members and the public on all that has been achieved in the previous year, and to set out the Heritage Partnership's ambitions for the coming year. It will enable targets to be set, and finances to be approved, within the strategy's long-term objectives, and will enable stakeholders to better understand how the sector is protecting Jersey's heritage."

The Government of Jersey has committed to investing 1% of Government expenditure in arts, culture and heritage from 2022. This consultation opens today (Friday 17 September) and will remain open for six weeks. Anyone who would like to take part can visit gov.je/consultations.
