Consultation on Interim Retail Strategy

02 June 2021

st helier
Islanders are invited to give their feedback on the recently-published Interim Retail Strategy, which sets out Government’s proposed programme to support and reinvigorate the industry in the short and medium term.

The interim strategy sets out four workstreams:

  • better connection with Government, with the objective of improving stakeholder connectivity and consideration in government, in order to achieve better sectoral policy development
  • improving the quantity and quality of data collected by 2023, to inform government policy development, Parish of St Helier, Jersey Business service provision and industry decision-making
  • expanding business support by increasing the service provision from Jersey Business as they help the Island’s retailers gain greater financial resilience and productivity
  • direct engagement with and, if necessary, a formal submission from the Minister to inform the review of the Island Plan retail policies.
The Assistant Economic Development Minister, with responsibility for retail, Deputy Kirsten Morel, said: “Retail is a vital industry sector that affects all islanders, so everyone is invited to give their views of the strategy however I am especially keen to get feedback from retailers themselves, both via relevant industry organisations and directly. These are the first steps in the government working to secure a sustainable future for retail, and our success will require Government and industry stakeholders to work closely together.

“The feedback we receive now will help set the direction of the work that we do over the next 36 months in delivering a full retail strategy that will ensure Islanders continue to have access to a thriving local retail industry. The sector faces a wide range of challenges, and I am confident that, by working in partnership, Government and businesses can develop the right strategy to provide for a strong and vibrant retail sector long into the future.”

The survey will run until Wednesday 30 June.
