Law Officers’ Department becomes Best Companies accredited and maintains Lexcel accreditation

03 November 2022

Together with all States Departments the Law Officers' Department took part in the Be Heard employee engagement survey in the summer of 2020. The Law Officers committed to running a staff engagement survey every two years and the survey was repeated in October 2022.

The results of the 2022 survey have been published on the Best Companies website as the Law Officers' Department has officially gained Best Companies One Star accreditation which Best Companies describe as: "a significant achievement that shows an organisation is taking workplace engagement seriously."

The 2022 survey had a response rate of 79% within the Law Officers' Department and an overall engagement score of 78% which had increased from an already high base of 66% in the 2020 survey.

Questions such as 'I feel proud to work for this organisation' and 'My organisation makes a positive difference to the world we live in' received particularly high scores.

The Be Heard survey results were echoed by the findings of an independent assessment of the Department also undertaken in October 2022, with the Law Officers' Department being awarded Lexcel accreditation for 'excellence in practice management and client care' for the fourth year running.

Lexcel assessor, Tracy Thompson, highlighted 21 areas of good practice in her assessment report, the majority in the area of People Management, and 11 suggestions for best practice.

Mrs Thompson noted that; "The department's approach to learning and development and in particular the progression of its staff is exemplary. Numerous interviewees expressed how they have been given opportunities which they would not get in private practice which is welcomed."

Commenting on the team culture within the Law Officers' Department, Mrs Thompson reported that; "The team spirit within the department appears to be extremely supportive. Everybody is happy to make time for colleagues and no barriers exist between management and the team." Mrs Thompson added that; "The assessor was informed by several interviewees how there is a real culture of appreciation within the department."

Commenting on the results of the Best Companies and Lexcel accreditation, Attorney General, Mark Temple KC said: "I am very grateful to everyone who completed the Be Heard survey for having given open and honest feedback and to each member of staff for their dedication and commitment to the high standards and supportive team culture that was evidenced in the Lexcel assessment. I am delighted to see that both the survey and the Lexcel assessment reveal that the Department is a happy place to work, in particular during these recent challenging times."
