Youth Parliament Applications Open

12 May 2022

Young people with a keen interest in politics are being given the opportunity to apply to become a member of Jersey's Youth Parliament.

Forty young people aged between 12 and 18 are needed for the project which has been spearheaded by the Jersey Youth Service. The application window opened on May 1st and closes on election day (22nd June 2022).

The initiative supports young people in Jersey to lead and engage in discussions about issues that affect them. Vanya Ramanathan, JYP Member said: "Personally, I have met so many wonderful people that I would say are now my friends and I've also been able to make a real difference which is not something you can say every day. It is also a great way to build a whole bunch of skills that you never thought you could have. Overall it's something really different to anything you will ever do in your life!"

Lisa Mansell, Senior Youth Worker who has helped set up Jersey Youth Parliament, said: "The Jersey Youth Parliament aims to give young people a real opportunity to make a difference in the Island.

"There are so many different opportunities to be involved – you don't necessarily have to enjoy public speaking or debating we need a whole range of young people to take part from aspiring politicians to those who are interested in dealing with the media and those who like running websites."

The Youth Parliament is also looking for volunteers. Anyone who thinks they could be a mentor, help with the running of the Parliament or deliver training programmes to members can find out more at Jersey Youth Parliament Website.
