Drugs importation sentencing

16 October 2023

A 54-year-old man from Chester has today [Monday 16 October 2023] been sentenced by the Royal Court to three years and 10 months imprisonment for attempting to import cocaine into the Island.

Philip Roy Delduca travelled to Jersey on Sunday 11 June 2023 on-board the Condor vessel from Poole, as a passenger in a vehicle, driven by his elderly father.

On arrival the vehicle was stopped by Jersey Customs and Immigration Officers (JCIS) and the occupants questioned, to which Mr Delduca stated that he was visiting Jersey with his father for a short break and to go fishing.

Drug swabs taken from inside the vehicle and the personal effects of Mr Delduca proved positive to cocaine. A search of the vehicle was subsequently conducted which led to the discovery of the cocaine hidden under the passenger seat carpet within a silver foil package containing Kinder Eggs wrapped in cling film and a blue latex glove. Mr Delduca immediately took ownership of the drugs stating that his father knew nothing about it.

The total quantity of cocaine seized was 112 grams with a potential street value of £28,000.

Paul Le Monnier, Senior Manager for Borders at JCIS said: "It has been a busy season for our Jersey Customs and Immigration Officers working at the Borders, and their hard work has resulted in a good number of commercial seizures of controlled drugs. The sentencing of this individual draws the investigation to a successful conclusion."
