10 October 2025
The States of Jersey Fire and Rescue Service, SJFRS, is partnering with Jersey Electricity to provide free electric blanket testing next week.
This is an annual event carried out by Jersey Electricity’s electrical engineers and Jersey Fire
and Rescue Officers to make sure Islanders are staying warm and cosy this winter with heated
blankets, that are safe and not a fire risk.
Islanders can bring their electric blankets to either of these two sessions at the Western Fire
Station in St Brelade:
- Tuesday 14 October – 10am to 3pm
- Wednesday 15 October – 10am to 3pm.
There is no need to book, simply turn up with your blankets. If they can’t be tested on the spot
while you wait, you will be told what time you can come back to collect them.
If your blanket fails the safety test, Jersey Electricity will dispose of it. You will receive a
Powerhouse 10% discount voucher, which can be redeemed against the purchase of a new
one.
Please be aware that any blankets over 10 years old will be automatically declared unfit for use
and will be disposed of. A Powerhouse 10% discount voucher will be given in return for your old
electric blanket.
A Community Fire Safety Officer will also be on hand throughout the testing to offer advice on
fire safety in the home.
Here are some simple tips to stay safe when using electric blankets:
- Ensure it meets safety standards: Electric blankets should conform to the British
Standard and carry the BSI kite mark, or the BEAB European Standard mark.
- Regular inspections: Examine your electric blanket for any signs of wear, fraying, or
damage before use.
- Follow manufacturer instructions: Adhere to the manufacturer's instructions
regarding usage, washing, and storage of electric blankets.
- Avoid overheating: Never leave an electric blanket turned on for an extended period
and switch it off before getting into bed.
- No pets or heavy objects: Keep pets and heavy objects off the electric blanket to
prevent damage.
- Replace old blankets: If your electric blanket is more than ten years old or shows signs
of wear, please replace it with a newer model.
For Islanders who would like their electric blankets tested but are unable to travel to the
Western Fire Station on 14 and 15 October, they can drop off their blankets at Jersey Fire HQ at
Rouge Bouillon by 5pm on Monday 13 October.
Each blanket needs to be labelled with a name, address and a contact number for a safe return
to the owner.
SJFRS Fire Safety Watch Commander, Toby Aubert said, “As the colder weather sets in, we
remind everyone to use electric blankets safely to prevent electrical fires. Always buy new,
follow the manufacturer’s instructions, and check for damage before use. Never use them
damp, folded, or with a hot water bottle. How electrical blankets are stored and ensuring they
are not plugged into overloaded sockets is also very important. Faulty or misused electric
blankets can cause fires, but by following these guidelines, you can enjoy the warmth of your
electric blanket while minimising the risk of fire. Let’s stay warm and safe this winter.”
