Mydeposits Jersey has been reappointed as the administrator of the Island’s tenancy deposit
scheme. This decision by the Minister for Housing, Deputy Sam Mézec, ensures the continued
protection of tenants’ deposits and ongoing support for tenants and landlords across Jersey.
Since its inception in November 2015, mydeposits Jersey has successfully managed the
scheme, which now safeguards deposits for nearly 10,000 Islanders, with a total value of
approximately £15 million. The scheme also provides a free, impartial dispute resolution
service, making sure that disagreements over deposits are resolved fairly, efficiently, at no cost
to either party, and avoiding Petty Debts Court.
The renewed contract will commence on 31 October 2025 and will run for a maximum of five
years, initially for three years, with the option to extend for a further two years subject to
performance.
It is a legal requirement for landlords to protect tenancy deposits using the approved scheme.
Failure to do so is a criminal offence.
The Minister for Housing, Deputy Sam Mézec said: “I am very pleased to confirm the
reappointment of mydeposits Jersey as the administrator of the tenancy deposit scheme. The
scheme plays a vital role in promoting fairness and trust in the rental market, giving both
tenants and landlords confidence that deposits are protected and disputes are resolved
independently and fairly.
“I remain committed to raising standards across Jersey’s rented sector and ensuring that
renters benefit from a modern legal framework that delivers robust protections, affordability,
and greater security of tenure. I look forward to continuing our partnership with
mydeposits Jersey to strengthen awareness and engagement with deposit protection.”
Eddie Hooker, Founder and CEO, mydeposits, said: “We’re proud to be reappointed to
administer Jersey’s tenancy deposit scheme and to continue the work we began almost ten
years ago. Since 2015, our role has been simple, give tenants confidence that their money is
protected, and give landlords the reassurance that any dispute will be handled fairly, impartially
and at no cost to either party.
“Safeguarding nearly £15 million in deposits for close to 10,000 Islanders is a responsibility we
take seriously, and we welcome the Minister’s commitment to a rental market that is fair,
transparent and well regulated.
“As we enter this further term, we’ll focus on making deposit protection even easier to
understand and access, raising awareness of renters’ rights and responsibilities, and
supporting landlords and letting agents to comply with Jersey’s standards. We look forward to
continuing our partnership with the Government of Jersey to help deliver a modern, trusted
private rented sector.”
With around half of Jersey’s households living in rental accommodation, the renewal of this
contract reaffirms the Minister’s commitment to a fair and modern rental framework. This
announcement follows the States Assembly’s approval of significant updates to the Residential
Tenancy Law in September 2025, and the introduction of a landlord licensing scheme in May
2024. Together, these reforms aim to improve conditions for renters and enhance affordability
and security.
Deposits are held securely by mydeposits Jersey for the length of a tenancy, with
interest from deposits used to fund the operation of the scheme. During the upcoming contract
period, the focus will be on building upon mydeposits Jersey’s decade of experience, further
strengthening support for tenants, landlords, and letting agents, and reinforcing the scheme’s
value within the Island’s rental sector.
This initiative forms part of the Council of Ministers’ strategic priorities to improve the
experience of renters, deliver a new Residential Tenancy Law, and review the social rents policy
to better support those in greatest need, as outlined in the Common Strategic Policy 2024-2026.
