Free tyre safety checks are being run throughout October to increase awareness and improve road safety.
This is being delivered by the Road Safety team and Driver and Vehicle Standards (DVS) in the Infrastructure and Environment Department, in partnership with TyreSafe and TAF Tyres.
Free tyre checks for parked cars (or drop-ins on a first come first served basis):
- Wednesday 15 October (morning) – Les Jardins Car Park
- Thursday 16 October (morning) – Patriotic Street Car Park
- Monday 27 October – Jersey Airport Car Park
TyreSafe will also be available at the Jersey Rally, between Thursday 9 and Saturday 11 October, providing tyre safety advice to attendees.
All vehicles parked at the car parks and the airport on the listed days will automatically receive a free tyre check. Islanders can also stop by to have their tyres inspected on a first-come, first-served basis.
This is part of a tyre safety initiative to help the Government of Jersey better understand the condition of vehicle tyres in Jersey. There will be no penalties for worn tyres, but drivers will be advised if their tyres are unsafe and need immediate attention.
The Minister for Infrastructure, Constable Andy Jehan, said: “Tyre safety may seem a small detail, but it makes a big difference to road safety. Through this initiative we are giving Islanders a free opportunity to check their tyres — at the rally, in town car parks, and at the airport.
“The data we collect helps us understand the scale of any safety issues, but of course the real value lies in the lives we can protect by encouraging people to act before problems arise."
Stuart Lovatt, Chair of TyreSafe, said: “Tyres are the first and only point of contact with the road, yet they are often the last thing drivers think about. We're proud to be working alongside the Government of Jersey again this year to make tyre checks simple, accessible, and part of everyday motoring.
“Through education, practical checks, and data-driven insight, we can help drivers build safer habits and prevent avoidable collisions."
- Last year's TyreSafe checks in Jersey showed 21% of tyres required replacement and 27% were borderline
- Tyres are the only point of contact between a vehicle and the road. Correct pressure, sufficient tread depth, and good condition are essential for safe driving
- The initiative supports Jersey's Collision and Casualty Reduction Plan, which aims to cut by half the number of people killed or seriously injured on the Island's roads by 2034
