The States of Jersey Fire and Rescue Service, SJFRS, is partnering with Jersey Electricity to provide free electric blanket testing next week.
This is an annual event carried out by Jersey Electricity’s electrical engineers and SJFRS Officers to make sure Islanders have heated blankets, that are safe and not a fire risk.
Islanders can bring their electric blankets to either of these two sessions at the Western Fire Station in St Brelade:
- Wednesday 7 October, 9am to 4pm
- Thursday 8 October, 9am to 4pm
There is no need to book, simply turn up with your blankets. If they can’t be tested on the spot while you wait, you will be told what time you can come back to collect them.
If your blanket fails the safety test, Jersey Electricity will dispose of it. You will receive a Powerhouse 10% discount voucher, which can be redeemed against the purchase of a new one.
Please be aware that any blankets over 10 years old will be automatically declared unfit for use and will be disposed of. A Powerhouse 10% discount voucher will be given in return for your old electric blanket.
A Fire Prevention Officer will also be on hand throughout the testing to offer advice on fire safety in the home.
Here are some simple tips to stay safe when using electric blankets:
- ensure it meets safety standards, electric blankets should conform to the British Standard and carry the BSI kite mark, or the BEAB European Standard mark
- regular inspections, examine your electric blanket for any signs of wear, fraying, or damage before use
- follow manufacturer instructions, adhere to the manufacturer's instructions regarding usage, washing, and storage of electric blankets
- avoid overheating, never leave an electric blanket turned on for an extended period and switch it off before getting into bed
- no pets or heavy objects, keep pets and heavy objects off the electric blanket to prevent damage
- replace old blankets, if your electric blanket is more than ten years old or shows signs of wear, please replace it with a newer model.
For Islanders who would like their electric blankets tested but are unable to travel to the Western Fire Station on 7 and 8 October, they can drop off their blankets at Jersey Fire HQ at Rouge Bouillon by 5pm on Monday 5 October. Each blanket needs to be labelled with a name, address and a contact number for a safe return to the owner.
SJFRS Fire Safety Watch Commander, Phil Falle said, “As we head into the colder months, we want Islanders to stay warm and safe in their homes. We’re pleased to continue working with JEC to offer free electric blanket safety checks, helping to reduce the risk of fire and keep our community safe. We encourage everyone to take advantage of the service and have their blankets checked before winter sets in.”
