The Government of Jersey has published the latest quarterly Public Sector Staffing Statistics report today, which shows the number of people working in the public service.
Excluding healthcare and education staff, headcount and Full Time Equivalent, FTE, numbers decreased by 4.7% at the end of June 2026 compared with the same time last year.
Overall numbers increased in the same period by 1.4%, FTE, and 1%, headcount, when staff from Health Care Jersey, HCJ, and Children, Young People, Education and Skills, CYPES, are included.
The figures demonstrate the Government’s continued focus on protecting essential frontline services while maintaining tight control over recruitment and workforce growth elsewhere.
The report also shows vacancy levels remain low at 1.1% across government, reflecting the impact of recruitment controls, while staff turnover also compares favourably with the UK public sector with HCJ turnover at 6% compared with 10.2% in the NHS.
Deputy Malcolm Ferey, vice-chair of the States Employment Board, said: "These figures show that we are delivering on our commitment to limit growth in the size of government while ensuring Islanders continue to receive the healthcare, education and other essential services they rely on."
The report is available at Public Sector Staffing Statistics 30 June 2026.
