Technical and specialist content standards

Technical and specialist content

Gov.je has a readability standard of Grade 5 to 7 (UK reading age approximately 9 to 13 years).

However, for some content written only for a professional, technical, specialist or legal audience it may not be possible to meet Grade 7 without losing accuracy or meaning.

In these cases, we may agree to an exemption, this allows a higher readability level, up to a maximum of Grade 10 (UK reading age approximately 15 to 16 years).

Exemption criteria

An exemption is not a bypass. It’s a controlled, justified and reviewed decision that must be agreed by Web Services.

Exempt, technical content must still meet accessibility and readability expectations where possible.

This includes:

An exemption is only allowed if:

  •

content is only intended for a professional, technical, specialist or legal audience

  •

attempts to meet Grade 7 with Web Services have failed

  •

it's not possible to meet Grade 7 without changing fundamental, technical and legal accuracy

Technical content standards

A higher readability grade does not mean accessibility can be  completely ignored.

We must still make complex content as clear as possible, even for expert users.

All technical and specialist content must:

  •

be reviewed and agreed by Web Services

  •

include a plain English summary written at Grade 7

  •

be clearly labelled as technical or specialist content

  •

be well structured using clear headings

  •

    use plain English where possible

  •

define legal and technical terms simply

  •

    use short sentences and paragraphs

  •

use the approved technical and specialist content page structure

Specified page structure

Technical and specialist content must follow a specified page structure so users can understand and act on information quickly. It includes:

  • a technical content call out box
  • a plain English summary written at Grade 7
