About the project
The Western Bus Gate scheme will install a bus gate at the western end of the Esplanade, where it meets La Route de la Liberation and Gloucester Street.
The project aims to:
- give westbound buses a quicker, priority-only route to improve efficiency
- reduce congestion at Castle Street roundabout by redirecting buses along the Esplanade
- slow traffic at the Liberation and Esplanade junction with a raised crossing for pedestrians and cyclists
- improve the area’s look and feel with greenery, a bus shelter and new street furniture at the Western Bus Gate

Access
During Phase 3:
- new pedestrian route in place, access to all businesses and premises are maintained
- cyclists need to use the alternative bike racks provided at the Esplanade
Bus
There is no bus diversion planned during Phase 3.
