Who is eligible for student finance

What we fund

We only fund first time degrees.

You must meet certain residency and academic criteria and you must not have a loan or a financial award from another educational authority.

Dependent or independent student

You're an independent student if:

  • you're 25 years old on or before 31 August of the calendar year in which Jersey's academic year commences. Jersey's academic year starts on 1 September
  • you're married
  • you've been living financially independently of your parents for at least three years before the start of your degree

If you don't match any of the above you're a dependent student.

Residential criteria guide

If you're a dependent student you and your parents:

  1. must have lived in Jersey for five years immediately on or before 31 August of the calendar year in which Jersey's academic year commences. Jersey's academic year starts on 1 September
  2. would have been resident but they were, or are, temporarily employed outside the Island

You also meet the residential criteria if you've not lived in Jersey for five years but your residential status is Entitled and you've:

  1. lived in Jersey for at least 12 months on or before 31 August of the calendar year in which Jersey's academic year commences. Jersey's academic year starts on 1 September

If you're an independent student you:

  1. must have lived in Jersey for five years immediately on or before 31 August of the calendar year in which Jersey's academic year commences. Jersey's academic year starts on 1 September
  2. would have been resident but you were, or are, temporarily employed outside the Island

You also meet the residential criteria if you've not lived in Jersey for five years but your residential status is Entitled and you've:

  1. lived in Jersey for at least 12 months on or before 31 August of the calendar year in which Jersey's academic year commences. Jersey's academic year starts on 1 September

Time off island or 'gap year'

If you match point 1 or 2 for either independent or dependent students then you're able to leave the island for no more than a total of 12 months within those five years. If you match point 3 for either independent or dependent students, please contact Student Finance for details.

Funding foundation courses

As of academic year 2019 / 20 the award for a one year course at Level 3 in an arts-related subject is limited to the cost of an equivalent course provided by Highlands College.

We don't fund foundation certificate or diploma courses (often known as Year 0).

If you've received funding for an art foundation course and want to start a degree course in an unrelated subject no funding is available for the first year unless the course requires you to have the art foundation certification.
