Who is eligible for student finance

We only fund first time degrees. You can apply for funding if you're a student, have an undergraduate degree or a professional qualification, eg PGCE, LPC, BPTC, at a recognised institute.

You must meet certain residency and academic criteria and must not have had a loan or a financial award from another educational authority.

Dependent or independent student

You'll be classed as an independent student if you:

  • are 25 years old before 31 August of the first year of the course
  • are married and over the age of 21
  • have been living financially indepe​ndent​ of your parents for at least three years before 31 August of the first year of the course
If you don't meet any of the above criteria, you'll be classed as a dependent student. 

​Dependent students​​

If you're a dependent student, you and your parents must have been resident in Jersey for five years immediately before 31 August of the first year of the course, or would have been resident but for the fact your parents are, or were, temporarily employed outside the Island. 

If you haven't lived in Jersey for five years before 31 August of the first year of the course, but you've lived in Jersey for at least 12 months before 31 August, you might qualify if you possess "Entitled" status. 

Independent students ​​

If you're an independent student, you must have been resident in Jersey for five years immediately before 31 August of the first year of the course. 

If you haven't lived in Jersey for five years before 31 August of the first year of the course but you've lived in Jersey for at least 12 months before 31 August, you might qualify if you possess "Entitled"​ status. 

Time off the Island​ before applying

You ​can take a total of 12 months off Island in five years before you apply and​ you'll still be eligible for funding. 

Academic qualification requirements​

The table below outlines the academic requirements for funding.

Funding foundation courses

Apart from art foundation, we don't fund foundation certificate or diploma courses (often known as Year 0). 

If you've received funding for an art foundation course and want to start a university degree course (or a comparable course) in an unrelated subject which doesn't require the art foundation certification, you won't receive funding for the first year of the degree course.
