Work shadowing (16 to 19 year olds)

​​​Institute of Directors (IOD) work shadowing scheme

The IOD scheme offers a unique opportunity to shadow a director, senior executive or manager in business or industry for one week, usually during the school summer holidays.

The scheme is open to year 12 students across all the Island secondary schools and first year students at Highlands College.

Industries offering shadow placements

Most local industries offer work shadowing placements. Whatever organisation you are placed in, you will find that a lot of the skills and qualities required by senior managers and directors are transferrable across all sectors, making it a valuable experience regardless of your chosen career path.

How to apply

The scheme is competitive. To apply you need to:

  • submit your CV and a covering letter to Skills Jersey
  • attend an interview with a panel of three, made up of representative from the sponsor firm (KPMG), the IoD and Skills Jersey

The shadow schemes are launched in February / March. Workshops are also offered to help you prepare your CV, covering letter and interview.

Deadline for applications

You will be informed of the deadline at the presentation evening during the spring term. The exact deadline varies year to year.

Work to do following the shadowing experience

Following the shadow week you will be required to complete a written project detailing what you have learned about your experience of leadership and management.

Feedback following your placement

The manager / director you shadow will be asked to write a brief reference / summary about you, which you can use within your record of achievement or UCAS personal statement.

Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM) work shadowing scheme

The CIM scheme offers a unique opportunity to shadow a marketing professional for up to one week, during the school / university holidays.

The scheme is open to year 12 students through to graduates of any age. 

Areas of marketing that are available to shadow

There are a wide range of opportunities, including:

  • marketing / PR / advertising / design agencies
  • marketing within tourism / finance / retail

How to apply

The scheme is competitive. To apply you need to:

  • submit your CV and an application form (downloadable below) to Skills Jersey
  • attend an interview with a panel of two or three, made up of representatives from the CIM and Skills Jersey

The JeCC scheme offers a unique opportunity to ‘shadow’ a construction professional for a week, during the school / university holidays.

The scheme is open to year 12 students through to graduates of any age. 

Areas of construction available to shadow

There are a wide range of opportunities, including:

  • architecture
  • construction management
  • civil engineering

The scheme is competitive. To apply you need to:

  • submit your CV and an application form (downloadable from the Jersey Construction Council website) to Skills Jersey
  • attend an interview with a panel of two or three, made up of representative from the JeCC and Skills Jersey
