If you're not employed, you can find out different ways to pay your Class 2 Social Security contributions.
With direct debit, you pay monthly in arrears, which helps you to spread the cost of your contributions throughout the year, rather than paying quarterly.
If your rate changes
We’ll update your direct debit automatically to help you avoid any overpayments or underpayments.
We’ll automatically send you any refund you are due at the end of the quarter.
You might have overpaid if you have:
- contribution credits
- Class 1 contribution payments
- a Short Term Incapacity Allowance claim
- a pension starting

Use your Social Security number as the reference when you make a payment. You can find this on your statement or letter.
If you include an incorrect reference, it might take longer for your payment to be made.
These bank details are only for Social Security contributions payments.
When payments are due
For standing orders, this table shows when payments are due by:

If you want to pay monthly, all payments for that quarter must be received by the payment due date.
You can pay your Class 2 contributions online using:
- MasterCard Debit
- Visa Debit / Business Debit / Electron
You'll need to have one of these documents to hand:
- statement of account
- reminder letter
- missing contribution letter
Debit card over the telephone
To pay over the phone using a debit card, call us on +44 (0) 1534 444444.
We don’t accept credit cards for Class 2 contributions payments.
You can pay by cheque addressed to Social Security.
We must receive your cheque seven days before your contributions are due, so that the payment can be processed in time.
You’ll be charged if the cheque bounces. We don't accept post-dated cheques.
At the cashier's desk at Customer and Local Services
From 1 March, if you’re unable to pay using other methods, you can pay up to £1,000 in cash at the cashier's desk at Customer and Local Services.
