Requirements for the job
You can only apply to be a firefighter during a recruitment period.
Before you can apply to be a firefighter, you need to meet certain entry requirements. You must:
- be at least 18 on your first day of service
- be educated to GCSE level or equivalent
- have been continuously resident in the Island for the past five years
- hold a full, clean driving licence
- be healthy and fit
- be able to swim 50 metres in light clothing
- have good sight (including contact lenses or glasses wearers) and colour perception in both eyes
- be confident working at height and in enclosed spaces
- be happy to work a shift system and at weekends
- have the ability to deal with people in difficult and emotional situations
In addition, to be an on-call Firefighter you must:
- have permission from your employer if you'll be responding from work
- be able to respond from work or home to your assigned fire station within 10 minutes
- be available to train on Monday and Tuesday

You will be expected
to pass each assessment point to progress to the next. People Hub will notify
you whether you will progress after each point.
1. Talent Link
Apply online, you must match all the criteria to be accepted to the next step.
2. National firefighter ability tests
National Firefighter Selections Test, which are online tests comprising of numerical and verbal reasoning assessments and a Firefighter talent screener.
3. Physical test
You will be tested in various tasks to assess your level of fitness, strength and manual dexterity as well as your confidence in simulated exercises.
You'll be required to complete the following physical tests:
- bleep test
- ladder climb
- casualty evacuation
- ladder lift and lower simulation
- enclosed spaces
- equipment assembly
- equipment carry
The bleep test is a series of shuttle runs between 2 points, 20 metres apart, keeping in time with a series of bleeps. A new level starts every minute and the timings of the signals get faster.
4. Interview
You will sit in front of an interview panel and be asked various questions for example:
What do you know about the Fire Service?
5. Swim test
For example: You must swim 50 metres, swim under water for 5 metres, and tread water for 3 minutes.
6. Medical exam
Good standard of
eyesight or corrected vision is required and is determined by our optician
during the health surveillance stage of the process and DBS check is conducted.
7. Final part
Once you have passed all the tests the final part of recruitment will be to be added to our Pool, which we will keep for 18 months.
8. Final offer made:
Full time
If you have passed your interview, medical, vetting and referencing, you will be invited to a uniform fitting and booked on to the next available intake date to start your formal training as a student firefighter in the UK for 14 to 18 weeks.
On-call
If you have passed your interview, medical, vetting and referencing, you will be invited to a uniform fitting and selected to join West or Town On-call firefighters, and you will be required to train on a 2 week local course.
