DSE assessments

A DSE training and assessment programme, Healthy Working, is available on the Cardinus system. Your departmental Cardinus Assessor will trigger an invitation to complete the programme, which takes roughly 45 minutes to work through. Guides to completing the Healthy Working programme are available for managers and employees. You should complete a DSE assessment when requested, as well as updating it when any changes are made to how you work. Once an assessment has been completed it's easy to update it. It's a requirement that you complete the Healthy Working programme whether working from home or in the office.

Special requirements

If you need any specific, not standard equipment including software or furniture for your workstation because of a known medical condition, you should complete a workstation / display screen assessment highlighting any issues and adjustments required.

This should be done online by completing a Healthy Working Assessment on the Cardinus system. If you require access, contact your departmental Cardinus Administrator.

Further information is available from your departmental health and safety adviser.

Working from home

When working from home, both manager and employee should complete a homeworking risk assessment. This is different from the DSE assessment as it covers your working environment and suitability to work from home including lone working.

You can find the risk assessment template on our FAQs page:

Chair position at desk

Making sure you're sitting comfortably and in the right position is really important to avoid musculoskeletal problems. When using DSE you should use a suitable chair which is stable (preferably with a five caster base) and can be adjusted for height, tilt and seat depth.

If you're using your own chair or a non-office type chair, make sure it's stable, suitable for the height of the table you're working from, and use a cushion for extra support and comfort. For longer term homeworking you should have a suitable chair.

If you've been supplied with an office chair, it's important that you take time and care to make sure it's properly adjusted. See the guide below.
