Nursery classes in primary schools (FOI)

Nursery classes in primary schools (FOI)

Produced by the Freedom of Information office
Authored by States of Jersey and published on 08 February 2017.

Request

A

Will the Education Department eventually provide or build a nursery class in every island primary school.

B

Will the NEF funding for three year olds continue to be provided for all.

Response

A

The Education Department’s Business Plan 2015 (Action 19) states: “Revisit the current policy that restricts the number of nurseries in States schools.”

Following this action the department has opened a nursery at Springfield School in 2016 and intends to open a nursery in Trinity School in 2017. There are plans to add a nursery to St Mary’s School in 2019.

The Education Department is also looking into the feasibility of opening a nursery in St Luke’s School and Les Landes School.

Education Business Plan 2015

B

At present the Nursery Education Fund (NEF) is available for children who turn four in the year before they attend reception class. Funding will be provided if a place can be found at a participating NEF nursery. Alternatively, parents can apply to a school’s nursery.
