How much does it cost for uniforms for the Police, Fire, Ambulance and Customs?

Please also advise for each how much it would cost for one officer male and female.

Please also detail what garments and equipment are supplied.

When an officer leaves or resigns is all the equipment returned and reused?

Please find below a response on behalf of the individual services. Please note that the definition of what items constitute “Uniform” and “Personal Protection Equipment” (PPE) differs between services.

Ambulance Service

In regard to uniform the ambulance service spent approximately £5,300 for the whole of the service including some volunteer teams in 2016, which includes replacement items, new issue for new staff and personal protective equipment (PPE).

A full set of uniform for each officer depends on their post and costs between approx. £200 and £360 and is the same for both male and female officers.

Uniform garments for one frontline officer include;

  • shirts x 7
  • t-shirts x 7
  • trousers x 2
  • safety boots x 2 pairs
  • fleeces x 2
  • belt x 1
  • epaulettes x 3 pairs

There is additional PPE provided, not costed above with uniform, such as a safety helmet, hi-visibility jacket and a safety suit for hazardous areas.

When officers leave, some items may be reused but the decision is based on the state of wear at the time.

The total cost of uniform purchased by JCIS in 2016 was £3,024

On appointment, Passport and RGC Officers (counter staff) are issued with:

This central stock is loaned out to officers who have not been issued with a formal uniform, as and when they are required to wear one.

All serviceable uniform items are re-issued, any that cannot be re-used are securely destroyed.
