Please find below a response on behalf of the individual services. Please note that the definition of what items constitute “Uniform” and “Personal Protection Equipment” (PPE) differs between services.

Ambulance Service

A
In regard to uniform the ambulance service spent approximately £5,300 for the whole of the service including some volunteer teams in 2016, which includes replacement items, new issue for new staff and personal protective equipment (PPE).

A full set of uniform for each officer depends on their post and costs between approx. £200 and £360 and is the same for both male and female officers.

Uniform garments for one frontline officer include;

  • shirts x 7
  • t-shirts x 7
  • trousers x 2
  • safety boots x 2 pairs
  • fleeces x 2
  • belt x 1
  • epaulettes x 3 pairs

There is additional PPE provided, not costed above with uniform, such as a safety helmet, hi-visibility jacket and a safety suit for hazardous areas.

When officers leave, some items may be reused but the decision is based on the state of wear at the time.

Customs & Immigration Service (JCIS)

The total cost of uniform purchased by JCIS in 2016 was £3,024

At initial issue, male & female multi-functional officer uniforms cost is £905.00

On appointment, multi-functional Officers are initially issued with:

  • black trousers x 2
  • black polo shirts x 3
  • hi-visibility waterproof coat x 1
  • black softshell jacket x 1
  • black beanie hat x 1
  • body Armour x 1
  • epaulettes x 2 pairs
  • steel toe capped black shoes x 1
  • steel toe capped black boots x 1
  • white shirts x 1
  • black tie x 1
  • handcuffs, key & pouch x 1
  • utility belt x 1
  • personal notebook pouch x 1
  • torch x 1
  • fast straps (single use plastic ‘handcuffs’) & pouch x 1

On appointment, Passport and RGC Officers (counter staff) are issued with:

  • black trousers or skirts x 2
  • white shirts x 3
  • black cardigan x 1
  • black tie (for male officers) x 1

After initial issue, uniform items are only replaced when they become unserviceable.

D
The Service has historically issued multi-functional officers with a court uniform consisting of a formal jacket, white shirt, black tie and black trousers. These formal uniforms have not been issued to individual officers for several years. Presently, when an officers leaves the Service these uniform items are returned and are stored centrally.

This central stock is loaned out to officers who have not been issued with a formal uniform, as and when they are required to wear one.

All serviceable uniform items are re-issued, any that cannot be re-used are securely destroyed.

States of Jersey Police (SoJP)

The total cost of uniform purchased by SoJP in 2016 was £24,541

Fire & Rescue Service (JFRS)

The total cost of uniform purchased by JFRS in 2016 was £16,576.34. This excludes the cost of Personal Protection Equipment (PPE).

Uniform costs are the same for male and female at £234 per person. This excludes Personal Protection Equipment.

When an officer leaves or resigns, all uniform and equipment is returned. PPE is assessed to see if it is re-usable for spare “pool” stock. All uniform items except those worn next to the skin are assessed for wear and tear and either discarded or placed into spare stock. Items worn “next to skin” are discarded.
