Request

Please advise what exams are compulsory by law for my child to take in year 11 at a private fee paying school.

Response

The Education (Jersey) Law 1999 outlines only the requirement for compulsory schooling, whether private or States of Jersey administered, to end on 30 June in the school year that the child turns 16.

There is no stipulation in the Education (Jersey) Law 1999 for compulsory examinations.

Education (Jersey) Law 1999

For States of Jersey maintained, and fee-maintained schools, the Education Department guidelines currently stipulate that pupils have an entitlement to study, at least, English and Mathematics until the end of year 11. From September 2017 this entitlement extends to include Science.
