Secondary school funding is allocated annually according to an Age Weighted Pupil Unit (“AWPU”) based on the number of pupils at an agreed census date, plus a fixed element to cover school overhead costs eg premises. The AWPU is the main variable element of funding and covers costs of leadership, teaching, special needs, support staff, resources, support services, and the costs of running and maintaining the premises.

Schools are not charged for corporate overheads covering items such as departmental senior management, finance,  human resources and IT support. Schools also use fund raising to fund some capital projects.

Funding rates differ for pupils in key stage 3, 4 and 5 and consist of fixed and variable elements. Variances between schools will arise as a result of differing numbers in each key stage and differing levels of funding for pupils with special educational needs (SEN) and social, emotional and behavioural difficulties (SEBD). Therefore the school funding per pupil will differ between schools and indeed between years.

The four fee paying schools (Victoria College, Jersey College for Girls, Beaulieu Convent School and De La Salle College) receive funding equivalent to 50% of the total calculated for their school context. The States of Jersey fee paying schools (Victoria College and Jersey College for Girls) receive public money to support premises, maintenance as well as costs of some capital projects. The private fee paying schools (Beaulieu Convent School and De La Salle College) do not.

The following table summarises the spend per pupil based on annual funding:
