Response

Following international standards, the food group of Jersey’s Retail Price Index (RPI) is made up of 29 “sections” as follows:

  • Bread

  • Cereals

  • Biscuits & cakes

  • Beef

  • Lamb

  • Pork

  • Bacon

  • Poultry

  • Other meat

  • Fish (not fresh)

  • Fish (fresh)

  • Butter

  • Oils & fat

  • Cheese

  • Eggs

  • Milk

  • Milk products

  • Tea

  • Coffee, cocoa, etc.

  • Soft drinks

  • Sugar & preserves

  • Sweets & chocolate

  • Processed potatoes

  • Non-processed potatoes

  • Processed vegetables

  • Fresh vegetables

  • Processed fruit

  • Fresh fruit

  • Other foods

Each of the above sections are further broken down into a number of “representative items”. There are 156 representative food items in total. A number of price quotes are collected for each item throughout a range of outlets in Jersey, from small convenience stores to large supermarkets.

It is not possible to provide a list of the specific food items priced or the shops used to compile Jersey’s RPI.

Retailers allow the price collectors to enter their premises to collect food prices on a voluntary basis. The retailers are assured that the price information collected will be kept confidential, will only be used by Statistics Jersey to produce aggregate statistics and will not be shared or otherwise communicated to any third parties. Article 26 of the Freedom of Information (Jersey) Law has therefore been applied.

Exemption applied

Article 26 Information supplied in confidence

Information is absolutely exempt information if –

(a) it was obtained by the scheduled public authority from another person (including another public authority); and

(b) the disclosure of the information to the public by the scheduled public authority holding it would constitute a breach of confidence actionable by that or any other person
