Request

A
How many people were recorded to have died from sepsis/septic shock in 2015, 2016 and 2017?

B
How many people were recorded as having sepsis in 2015, 2016 and 2017?

C
Of these, how many were children (prior to their 16th birthday)?

Response

A
A search for descriptions of ‘Septic’ or ‘Sepsis’ in the ICD-10 code table shows the following associated Level 4 ICD-10 codes:

A40A41A42 A02
A23 A32A54B377
 I2601I76G9341O03
O04O07O08R65
P36 T814

Of these codes only two appear as a final classification of death (i.e. have been ultimately attributed as the cause of death) of Jersey residents over the period 2015-2017: A403 (sepsis due to Streptococcus pnueumoniae) and A419 (Sepsis, unspecified organism).

See the table below for a breakdown of the deaths by these codes, rounded to the nearest five. Where numbers are less than five the exact figure is not provided as it is considered this could lead to the identification of individuals.

201520162017
Total resident deaths760830810
A403<5<5<5
A419<5 105

B
The guidance and rules for coding sepsis have been updated each year which means data is incomparable between these three years.

The table below shows a count of the number of inpatient episodes coded as sepsis as per each particular year’s coding rules.

2015 20162017
Total343 233 295
Age <1687406

C
None of the deaths attributed to sepsis occurred to a person aged under 16.
