These questions relate to the Jersey Blood transfusion service suspension:
How much whole blood and or Plasma has had to be imported into the Island due to the closure of the Jersey blood transfusion service?
Where was the blood / Plasma imported / obtained from?
What was the cost to the Health department of any such purchase and the associated costs of shipping it to the Island?
While the Jersey Blood Service was closed, 1998 units of red cells and 177 units of plasma were imported.
All of the red cells and plasma were obtained from National Health Service Blood and Transplant in England.
The cost of the purchases and the associated shipping was £348,352
For comparison, in the same period in the preceding year, the consumables cost for manufacturing blood on island was £411k. The initiative therefore saved £63k, which was reinvested in improvements to the blood service.
