Request

From Treasury Records 06 January 1941 to 24 January 1946.

I am researching the sale of vehicles that were commandeered by the German Forces during the Occupation for the period above. In particular Public service vehicles eg taxis, coaches and buses.

I know that some vehicles were bought back by previous owners and that others were purchased by other operators. I also know that some vehicles were never returned because they were shipped overseas eg the Pioneer Coach fleet, the J.B.S. Fleet and some of General Services Fleet (Primrose Tours). I understand that this document remains closed until 2022 but receiving this information will be most useful in my research, and therefore request that I have your permission to view this information early. I look forward to your reply in this matter.

The documents are held at Jersey Archives under their Reference D/AU/V2/26.

It is only the PSV information that I am looking for. For example, vehicles commandeered by the Germans and their subsequent disposal.

  • were then vehicles returned to their rightful owners after the occupation

  • where did they go if not returned to their rightful owners, and

  • which of the commandeered vehicles left the Island

Response

A review of the referenced file revealed that all but one item referred to private cars, motorcycles and a commercial vehicle.

Attached is the one reference to two Public Service Vehicles. Article 25 (Personal Information) of the Freedom of Information (Jersey) Law 2011 has been applied where necessary.

Letter dated 26 March 1941 re requisitioned vehicle
