Repayment of University tuition fee grants (FOI)

Repayment of University tuition fee grants (FOI)

Produced by the Freedom of Information office
Authored by States of Jersey and published on 02 January 2019.
Prepared internally, no external costs.

Request

During the past five years, how many, if any individuals have been pursued through legal action or otherwise for repayment of tuition fees for university study for students who have failed to complete the university course that they enrolled on within a UK establishment.

This request applies to tuition fees only.

Response

The numbers of debtors pursued over the past five years are as follows:

20142015201620172018
Numbers of debtors432442123

Numbers at each individual university have not been disclosed as they total under 10 for each year and could lead to the identification of the individuals concerned. Article 25 (Personal information) of the Freedom of Information (Jersey) Law 2011 has therefore been applied.

The numbers above do not include medical withdrawals as the Student Finance Section do not claim this back if medical evidence is provided.

There are also a number of other reasons for withdrawal on the system. These could be re-assessment of grant or that students do not follow their applications all the way through if they will receive no grant.

Article applied

(b) its supply to a member of the public would contravene any of the data protection principles, as defined in that Law.
