Request

During the teachers strikes in April and May 2019, the Government of Jersey did not pay teachers their salary as it was paid by the relevant union(s) involved.

For the fee-paying schools only, how much money did the Government of Jersey gain by not having to pay the teachers their salary on those strike days?

Response

The members of the National Education Union were on strike for eight days in May. There were no strikes in April. The total saving on the salaries of teachers in fee-paying provided schools was £64,286. This represents £61,312 on basic salaries and £2,974 on Social Security payments.
