Request

A
How many electric car charging points are there in Jersey?

B
How many rapid electric car charging points are there in Jersey?

C
How many electric car charging points for public use per 100,000 of population?

Response

A
The Growth, Housing & Environment Department (GHE) can confirm the number of points in public car parks for public use are as follows:

• 2 in Minden Place Car Park
• 2 in Green Street Car Park
• 2 in Patriotic Street Car Park
• 3 in Sand Street Car Park
• 8 in Pier Road Car Park

This makes a total to date of 17 public charging points.

Additionally, planning applications have recently been approved for chargers to be fitted at the following locations:

• 2 in First Tower Car Park
• 2 in St Aubin Car Park
• 2 in St Brelade Bay Car Park
• 1 in Red Houses Car Park

These installations are part of an ongoing programme of providing public charging spaces and are being developed in conjunction with Jersey Electricity. These numbers do not include Government of Jersey chargers used for the charging of electric fleet vehicles.

GHE have been unable to provide details of all electric vehicle charging points on the island as they do not hold details of private household or business installations. Jersey Electricity are likely to hold information on these private installations.

Whilst Jersey Electricity are not a Scheduled Public Authority for the purposes of the Freedom of Information (Jersey) Law 2011, and therefore are not obliged to respond to Freedom of Information requests, they may be able to provide you with further details of other installations available for public use. Their contact details can be found on their website at the following link:

www.jec.co.uk

B
GHE are unable to supply you with details of the total number of rapid vehicle charging points in Jersey as they do not hold information relating to installations for households or businesses. However a planning application has recently been submitted for one rapid charger at Longbeach Car Park, Gorey.

C
The current estimated population of Jersey (in 2018) is recorded as 106,800.

At the moment there are 15.91 charging points in public car parks per 100,000 of population. This is expected to raise to 23.40 per 100,000 population once the eight new units are installed. This excludes installations for private households, businesses and Government of Jersey fleet vehicles.

Further information

The above statement only includes the charging points in government-owned car parks. This  is not a definitive list as there are other charging points distributed across the island that are available to the public but on land in private ownership. There are registers of these online maintained by Non-Government Organisations – for example, https://www.zap-map.com/locations/jersey-charging-points/
