Importation of milk (FOI)

Importation of milk (FOI)

Produced by the Freedom of Information office
Authored by Government of Jersey and published on 15 January 2020.
Prepared internally, no external costs.

Request

Why doesn’t the Island import milk but it does import other dairy products like cream.

Response

In order to maintain Jersey’s iconic brown cow breed the import of liquid milk into the Island is prohibited under the Import and Export (Control) (Jersey) Order 1992

There is however provision within Schedule 2 of (Article 3(b)) for liquid milk to be imported under special circumstances, subject to the grant of a licence by the Minister for Treasury and Resources or the Agent of the Impôts:

Dairy products, other than liquid milk, may therefore be imported to the Island as they are not covered by this legislation.
