Bream fishing (FOI)

Bream fishing (FOI)

Produced by the Freedom of Information office
Authored by Government of Jersey and published on 10 July 2020.
Prepared internally, no external costs.

Request

A

I would like some information about the bream stock in Jersey before and after COVID 19

B

If possible any information on French fishing in Jersey and how much fish are they taking away from Jersey waters.

The data if possible would preferably be from 2019 or 2020.

Response

A

The Government of Jersey (GOJ) does not carry out any statistical stock modelling for bream species in Jersey.

The following table provides the total commercial landed weight for bream from Jersey vessels.

Bream landed from commercial fishing vessels

Year/Period

Weight (kg)

20193,187
1 January to 31 March 2020 187

Catch logbooks are submitted quarterly, therefore, the 2020 figure provided represents the data input for the first quarter only.

The majority of the Covid-19 lock down period was within the second quarter of 2020, therefore we are unable to provide you with further figures as log books are yet to be submitted.

 B

French vessels can access Jersey Waters under an agreement concerning fishing in the Bay of Granville.

These vessels are monitored and boarded by Marine Resources officers routinely to check catches, equipment and other requirements, and when necessary, appropriate enforcement action is taken.

The GOJ does not collect statutory catch or landing data from French fishing vessels.

However, the French Authorities collate this data and information relating to key species fished in the Normano-Breton Gulf for 2018, the latest year available, can be found within the Ifremer report linked below:

Ifremer report

We are in ongoing discussions with Ifremer to clarify the figures contained within this report and to improve the data on species fished.
