Norovirus cases linked to shellfish and molluscs (FOI)

Norovirus cases linked to shellfish and molluscs (FOI)

Produced by the Freedom of Information office
Authored by Government of Jersey and published on 17 May 2021.
Prepared internally, no external costs.

Request

I would like to request information about all cases of Norovirus that have been investigated in your area over the last 10 years - relating to shellfish and molluscs.

Response

None of the Norovirus cases investigated by Environmental Health in the last 10 years can be specifically attributed as Norovirus linked to shellfish or molluscs.

This is as a result of the following factors:

  • laboratory confirmation is not obtained in all suspected cases

  • no specific evidence to suggest that cases are linked with shellfish or molluscs

  • there are a range of other infections which have comparable symptoms to Norovirus

  • norovirus can be spread through a variety of routes / sources
