GST arising from medicinal cannabis importations (FOI)

GST arising from medicinal cannabis importations (FOI)

Produced by the Freedom of Information office
Authored by Government of Jersey and published on 11 November 2021.
Prepared internally, no external costs.

Request

Please could you provide figures for the amount of GST collected for medicinal cannabis from the beginning of 2020 to date, broken down by month and if possible, by importation vs. on-island sales.

Response

To date, all the medicinal cannabis imported to Jersey by private individuals has been dispatched from the UK. It is not necessary to provide commodity codes for goods traded between the UK and Jersey by virtue of the Jersey-UK Customs Arrangement. In the absence of commodity codes it is not possible to specifically identify medicinal cannabis consignments, therefore the amount of import GST charged cannot be ascertained.

This information is therefore not held. Article 3 of the Freedom of Information (Jersey) Law 2011 applies.

Article Applied

Article 3 - Meaning of “information held by a public authority”

For the purposes of this Law, information is held by a public authority if –

(a) it is held by the authority, otherwise than on behalf of another person; or

(b) it is held by another person on behalf of the authority.
