Request

How many people have died as a result of taking MDMA aka ecstasy over the past 10-years, broken down per month? I would like this broken down into to direct and indirect use of the drug if possible

Response

Deaths were first registered digitally from 1 January 2018 and therefore the requested statistics can only be extrapolated from that date. Article 16 of the Freedom of Information (Jersey) Law 2011 has been applied to data held prior to 2018, as it would take longer than 12.5 hours to collate.

Four deaths have been registered to date since January 2018 where MDMA is included within the cause of death – all as a result of Viscount's inquest. Those deaths were registered in:

  • May 2018
  • November 2018
  • March 2020
  • November 2020

Article applied

Article 16 A scheduled public authority may refuse to supply information if cost excessive

(1) A scheduled public authority that has been requested to supply information may refuse to supply the information if it estimates that the cost of doing so would exceed an amount determined in the manner prescribed by Regulations.
