Response

A

There are two tiers of medical on-call in Mental Health: the on-call middle grade doctor (Staff Grade), and the Consultant on-call.

B

On-call is staffed by the Staff Grades and Consultants employed by the Mental Health service (including Locums).

C

As above: calls initially go to the Staff Grade and then to the Consultant.

D

The clinical cost of the service is £241,679 per annum (an average of £20,140 per month).

E

The managerial cost is £30,528 per annum (£2,544 per month).

F

For medical staff: Staff Grades receive additional PA’s, whereas Consultants generally receive lieu time for on-call, though some opt to be paid for additional on-call duties undertaken.

On-call managers are paid a standard on-call allowance.

G

Payment is determined by the individual doctor’s contract.

H

Staff are paid for being on-call, not for the actual time worked. If staff work after 1:00 a.m. a compensatory rest arrangement is in place, depending on the time worked.

I

There are six Staff Grades on the on-call rota and 12 Consultants.

J

Staff Grades and Consultants.

K

Please see response to question F.

L

Yes, prospective cover is required for Staff Grades and Consultants. For Consultants, a small payment is made to provide the prospective cover. Prospective cover for Staff Grades is managed from the rota.

M to P

Not applicable.
