GST charges in respect of overseas suppliers (FOI)

GST charges in respect of overseas suppliers (FOI)

Produced by the Freedom of Information office
Authored by Government of Jersey and published on 07 July 2023.
Prepared internally, no external costs.

Request

How much is the Government of Jersey paying UK and overseas suppliers to collect GST on its behalf?

Or is there no charge involved and are UK and overseas suppliers collecting and remitting this tax for free?

If UK and overseas suppliers are charging to collect GST, is the charge a percentage of the tax involved or a fixed fee?

Response

The obligation on larger offshore retailers, who expect their turnover in Jersey to exceed £300,000 annually, to register for GST is created by statute (the Goods and Services Tax (Jersey) Law 2007).  Once registered they are obliged to charge GST.  Any compliance costs in adjusting systems have been borne by retailers.  The Government has made no payments to offshore retailers in respect of this change.
