Response

School reception classes for children starting school in September 2015 (public and private):
Information on private school reception classes is collected in September each year for that year’s intake. Therefore we will not hold confirmed information relating to private school reception intakes until September 2015.

There are 22 States non fee-paying primary schools with a reception class. In addition, JCG Preparatory school (JCGP) is a States fee-paying school with three reception classes.
Information provided below is for States non fee-paying schools and JCGP as indicated.

A.

Non fee-paying schools: We [Education, Sport and Culture Department] are currently not able to advise the number of children in each reception class, as the reception admissions process has not yet been completed. The second phase of admissions started on 2 March 2015 with appeals at the end of March. Final decisions about allocations will be known at the beginning of April once appeals decisions have been made. Actual numbers starting in reception will not be known until 3 September 2015 (the first day of term) as some parents may not require the place allocated to their child, for example if they leave the island.

We will provide details of the final allocations in April.

JCGP: JCGP takes 33 girls and 33 boys in reception each year. These children are organized into 3 classes of 11 girls and 11 boys each. Information on class sizes can be found within JCGP’s admission policy:

JCGP admission policy on the JCG Preparatory School website

B.

Non fee-paying schools and JCGP: Each reception class is allocated one teacher.

C.

Non fee-paying schools and JCGP: Each reception class is allocated one Teaching Assistant.

D.

Non fee-paying schools and JCGP: One teacher and one teaching assistant are allocated to each reception class, regardless of the class size.

E.

Non fee-paying schools: The average reception class size is anticipated to be between 26 and 27 children over the next 3 years. JCGP: As above, class size is expected to be 22 children per class over the next 3 years.
